How To Train Bloodhounds For Search And Rescue!

Preparing Your Bloodhound For Training!!

Training a bloodhound is a bit different than training a regular dog. They are naturally clumsey animals that don’t particularly make good for obedience training. They are very emotional animals that need to be tendered and cared for to get the best training results from them. They love to be loved on and cared for. This will help you tremendously when you begin your training them.

Training Bloodhounds To Search and Rescue!

Your very first day of training will consist of a rubber ball or golf ball which ever you choose to use. For the first couple of days you want to play pitch and fetch with him. This process is teaching him to retrieve things and getting him set in a pattern of doing this.

On your third day you will want to bring someone else in to use as a hide and seek player.

Let your partner come over so the bloodhound can scent him and then let your partner go hide just a little ways away and let the bloodhound go and find him. Continue performing this task for a couple of days each time moving the hiding technique a little further away until finally the search is being accomplished within a block or more.

Advanced Training Techniques for your Bloodhound!

Now that you have the bloodhound finding your partner on a regular basis within a block or so. It’s now time to begin his real mission—Search and Seisure. This best place to perform this training is in a country setting. Take a piece of your partners clothing from home with you for this training. Let your partner get out of your vehicle and run about a half of mile into the woods and hide. Take the clothing you brought with you and let the bloodhound smell the scent and go with him to find your partner. Remember this is a game to the bloodhound so you want him to continue believing that. Each time he finds your partner give him a treat and a lot of love. This will encourage him to continue performing this task. After a very short period of time your bloodhound will be able to find your partner wherever he goes as long as there is a scent to be picked up by your bloodhound.
