How To Encourage Good Dog Behavior

When it comes to dog discipline, you should never use physical force to get the point across to your dog that you do not approve of a certain action or behavior. This has no effect, and only harms your dog in many ways. This form of cruelty is not acceptable and should never be used on any animal. Beating an animal can have serious consequences not only for your dog, but for yourself. Training a dog the right way is not as hard as some may think and simply takes a little time.

There are other ways of training a dog to be obedient other than using physical force. If you want to reinforce good behavior, then you have to give your dog a reason for wanting to repeat that behavior. One way you can do this is by giving the dog praise after he or she has done something right. All it takes is a couple phrases like Good dog!, Good boy!, or Good girl!. Giving them positive attention like this will make them feel good about what they have done and chances are they will want to repeat that action in order to get that kind of attention again. If you want to reinforce the good behavior a little more than with just the simple praise commands, you can add in a small treat once in a while. This is often a very good strategy as well as all dogs love treats.

The trick to being successful at training your do is to reward good behavior, and never punish for bad behavior. Punishing your dog for bad behavior, especially if that punishment includes physical force, can leave painful scars, both physical and mental scars, on your dog. They won’t know whether to be angry at your or scared of you and neither one of these is acceptable. Your dog should not have to live this way so it’s important to keep in mind that positive reinforcement is always more effective than negative reinforcement.

If you’re having trouble with your dog and you’re just not sure what to do, try these few simple steps. When you see the negative behavior taking place, perhaps going to the bathroom in the house, try to intervene at the time it is occurring. When you catch your dog going to the bathroom in the house, lead them outside where they can finish the job and then reinforce that behavior with the praise tips mentioned above. Chances are this will not stop the problem the first time so you’ll have to repeat this a few times. Eventually your dog will learn that he or she is rewarded when they go outside instead of in the house.

Training your dog properly takes time and effort and simply does not happen overnight. If you feel that you have a problem with your dog, try these simple training steps to try and correct the problem. Never use negative reinforcement like scolding or beating your dog. If you’re tactics are just not working, then you may want to consult with a professional trainer to try and correct the problem at hand.
